Storybook - Chapter 2 Stage 3 "The Great Collapse"

She did not need the direwolves’ Father, Fenrir, to tell her twice to search for Aurora. At once, Cane Sugar began her preparations to track down the missing Felvarg. Ever since the Crescent Throne sat vacant, the tremors of both Helvalla and Ulfrheim had gotten worse. Just the thought of her homeland cracking apart, sinking into the hungry ocean below, turned her blood to ice in her veins. It terrified her beyond belief, although she did not let it fray her nerves. If anything it only spurred her forward with more energy. Together with Saga, she set out in the direction that Aurora was last seen.

The two Felvargs traveled briskly and with intent. Typically Cane Sugar enjoyed more scenic routes but she knew she could stop for nothing. Spring was in full bloom in Helvalla, but even she could tell that the land was suffering. Fallen trees littered the ground like branches broken in the wind and the sky above was held fast with clouds whipped by the wind. The evening sun hung lazily and provided little comfort. She could see scars on the land where great cracks opened up. Boulders laid spewed and broken, some so large she was shocked that any natural force could move them. A quake must have ravaged this land quite recently. She flicked her ear as a tattered pine creaked in the wind above them.

“Saga,” she started as the two females picked their way down the path. “Do you have any ideas on where our search should begin? I have a feeling that we can’t stay here very long. It seems like this entire crescent is ready to sink into the sea.”

Beside her the half cream, half white Highqueen was quiet before speaking. “She’s traveling north towards The Briar– Or at least that’s all I can put together so far. We should have a safe passage but I am more concerned about the land, as you mentioned.” Saga spoke with a type of confidence that made it sound as if she had the way planned, but Cane Sugar knew better. She could feel the waves of uncertainty prickling off of her Highqueen. Aurora was Saga’s mother after-all and it was only recently that the pain of losing her once struck the Highqueen. For Aurora to disappear again so suddenly… The cream Felvarg could only imagine the thoughts swirling around in her friends’ mind.

“I’m sure she is safe, whatever it is she’s doing.” Cane Sugar responded with both softness and certainty. Saga did not respond immediately but the curled fur on her nape flattened slightly. Despite the sudden disappearance, it was clear that Aurora had left the camp with packed provisions, and the Felvarg herself was more than adept at survival.

“Yeah,” she agreed after a few moments had passed, “She has to have at least a week's worth of provisions on her. It shouldn’t take us that long to track her down, but the sooner the better.” Saga paused before murmuring her closure. “I just wish I knew what she was thinking.”

Cane Sugar felt a stab of empathy for the Highqueen but she chose to indirectly brush on the addition. “Your mother is strong and noble, perhaps she had a revelation and needed to act quickly. If she is making her way towards the Crescent Throne, then we at least know where our search should end.”

Saga nodded in agreement as her eyes swept over the land. “Our passage through The Briar should be safe. It’s just a matter of getting there at this point. She did not leave the camp too long ago so she couldn’t have gotten far. We’ll start our search once we reach the Wayward Divergent.”

Cane Sugar shot a glance towards the Highqueen. “The Wayward Divergent?”

“Yes, they are the protectors of The Briar, as I have been informed. They won’t help us search but they’ll ensure our passage will be safe.”

“Ah. That is kind of them.” Cane Sugar remarked although her words held little backing. Saga whisked her tail passively.

“In any case, we should reach the rendezvous point within the hour. Hopefully this wind will clear up before sunset.”

As the two carried on, the wind only grew worse. Leaves and debris whipped through the air as the howling wind churned. Sunset was approaching quickly now as the evening wore on. Cane Sugar and Saga had not said much after their departure. Only what was necessary was said. They had reached The Briar and were greeted promptly by Shae, the Wayward Divergent, along with her soulmate, Rosaura. Since they were already aware of the situation there were not many words exchanged here either. The clock was ticking and not a soul on-board this mission wasted a single second.

The great volcano that made up The Crescent Throne stood boldly above them now. The Briar was situated at the floor of the Throne, creating what was once a savage living moat for the fortress. Now, the Wayward Divergent kept the area safe. The two of them could focus entirely on tracking Aurora down. Still, she knew the task was easier said than done. Tall shadows danced on the tattered forest floor as the bleeding sun hugged the horizon. The belt of Venus was beginning to show its crown now, with the brightest of stars glittering softly as the evening sun died. Anxiety pricked at her pelt as she turned her attention back to the ground-level.

“I’ve caught no scent this way. Or any, really.” Cane Sugar remarked as they rounded back to each other.

“No luck on my end either, I’m afraid.” Saga said, scanning the distant forest once more as she spoke.

“It’s odd that we have found no tracks either. Why would she be hiding her tracks so well?” Cane Sugar wondered aloud. Her eyes were fixed on the volcano’s icy top as if she was expecting it to give her an answer. “What could possibly drive her so far as to come here like this? It couldn’t have been an easy decision.”

Saga said nothing but her eyes showed that her thoughts were also whirling, asking questions that only Aurora herself could answer. They had to find her. “Let’s make our way towards the summit.” She said, breaking the silence.

Cane Sugar simply blinked as if surprised that any words were needed. “Then we can leave at once.”

As promised, their trek through The Briar was safe and uninterrupted. Despite its dense thicket and low-hanging canopy, Cane Sugar felt not a shred of uncertainty in the woods. Even as the wind pulled at her fur and stripped loose leaves from the trees, she did not falter. The land here was even worse than what she had seen elsewhere on the island. Scores of trees lay flattened where they fell and water flooded much of the lowland areas of the bay. Much of the wildlife had fled by now. That, or they remained as silent as possible to heighten chances of survival. The air stank of gasses and ash from the volcano. Even the ground appeared sooty, likely from ancient lava and fumes that long eroded into dust. Ahead of them, the tree-line was beginning to thin out as the ground became more and more inhospitable. It was here that their first solid clue was found.

Her eyes barely caught the pawprint, which was partially hidden under leafy debris. Closer inspection showed that part of it had been wiped away deliberately. Cane Sugar lifted her tail with excitement as she called out for Saga. “I found a print!”

It took only seconds for the bi-colored female to appear. “How fresh is it?”

“Well, part of it has been destroyed, but it can’t be more than a few hours. This sun and win would have dried it out by now if it were older.” Cane Sugar reported.

“I see…” Saga murmured as she thought. “The size looks right, and the timing is impeccable. What I still don’t understand is why she is hiding her tracks like this. We need to catch up with her quickly.”

Cane Sugar nodded in agreement. The two of them pushed forward in the direction of the print, which happened to be pointed in the exact direction they were going. This was the most efficient path out of The Briar, after all. As the treeline disappeared completely, the earth beneath their feet turned a darker, richer shade of black. The only trees here now were scattered, scraggly pines. Tufts of grass and moss grew here and there, but otherwise the landscape was barren. As she lifted her gaze up at their first pit-stop up the side, she couldn’t stifle the gasp of surprise.

“Look!” She prompted the Highqueen hastily. There, on the ledge, stood Aurora, who was gazing down at them with emotional turmoil in her eyes.

Saga didn’t need to be told twice. Her voice rang loud and clear as she cried out: “Please, come back!”
